"Be Stubborn!"

Text/ Interview: Sara Umbreit, Photos: Lasse Fløde

Norwegian product designer Falke Svatun knows exactly what he is doing, with good reason behind it. His products are a true reflection of this with their practicality and precision.

Sara: When did you start your studio and what is your background?

Falke: I did a Bachelor of Industrial Design in Sydney Australia and then worked for a few different design offices in Copenhagen. In 2014 I went back to Oslo and it was here where I founded the studio.

Sara: Do you follow a certain rule when it comes to designing?

Falke: No matter what you do, you have to be able to explain why. Be stubborn.

Sara: What do you most love about being a product designer?

Falke: Freedom, I look forward to going to work every day. The idea of doing exactly what I want without having to worry about financials is what drives me.

Sara: What inspires you?

Falke: It’s all about the project, but ultimately this could be anything. It could be something from nature, or as a form of light.

Sara: If money and time didn’t matter, what would your dream project be?

Falke: I’d start designing and building my own house. Building a bridge has been a big dream of mine.

Meanwhile, his collection of brass mirrors can be arranged amongst each other and float somewhere between art and product design. The mirrors play with a notion of rawness and playfulness through their unpolished edges - they’re something quite special for material lovers.

Svatun’s works usually only reveal their specialness after a careful inspection, take for example the ‘Tumble’, an object made from stone that can be placed on edges and corners by a cutout in it’s ‘belly’.
