The Advent Is Here!
Let's Begin with One, Then Two, Then Three...
We’re about to present three, very different candle sets from designers in Japan, Denmark and the Netherlands.
In just 5 short days the cheerful Advent season will finally be here! So if you already have a thing for candles, you’re surely the one who enjoys this time of year even more than the most of us.
Advents don’t always have to be the typical Advent wreath, so why not put up a very special set of candles this year? Ones that can stand alone regardless of Christmas and are sure to be the focal point of any room this season.
See below for our three selected designers and their current candle collections. Get ready for some real handiwork …
Daiyo is a joint project of designer Satoshi Onishi and his father Akihiro. Their handmade rice wax candles resemble the beeswax from which they came and follow a more than 400-year tradition. Firstly, the wax is extracted from the sumac tree which was originally found in the west of Japan. In recent times, sumac trees have been cultivated in other areas as they are particularly suitable for wax extraction. Once in the workshop, Satoshi and Akihiro let the candles start to spin and guide them by hand. Inside, the candles have a paper core under where the wax is layered. This particular technique cannot be done by machine as it requires a special craftsmanship that can take up to ten years to master perfectly.
Ferm Living certainly brings life and beauty to a home! The Danish label was founded in 2006 with a passion for distinctive Copenhagen style. Since then, it has impressed not only Danes, but European and international design enthusiasts alike with their special home accessories. Ferm Living has found its own style and sits at the top of Scandinavian design. Sustainability and clean materials take a firm lead in priority for the production of all products.
The fragrance candles from their current Christmas collection are made from a soy wax and are poured into handmade ceramic containers. They fill the room with a discreet fig smell.
The Auric candles from Dutch design company Ontwerpduo are equipped with an elegant gold leaf that has the fantastic ability to triple the candle light. The reflection is very beautiful in the dark evening hours to see the Advent in such festivity. To add, they are also handmade in the very studio situated in Holland and promise 30 hours of burning time!
